Education Committee - Representatives from Various Community Organizations
Priorities:
Advocating educational justice issues impacting people of color and the disadvantaged
Eliminating racial disparities in school suspensions
Encouraging support for low performing schools
Increasing parent/community awareness concerning issues involving public schools
Increasing parent/community engagement in public schools
Partnering with community stakeholders to create more positive outcomes for the youth of the community
Encouraging youth voter registration
Significant Contributions:
Suggested enhancing diversity/equity training for school personnel
Advocated for the signing of the School Justice Partnership
In 2019, hosted three community wide forums focusing on Eliminating Racial Disparities in School Suspensions
Members of the Education Committee attend monthly school board meetings, provide input into school policy, communicate regularly with school district administrators and support personnel
Future Events:
The Committee plans to continue hosting forums to inform and encourage community members to be more proactively involved in public education. (Depending upon COVID-19)
