ADVOCATES FOR EQUALITY IN EDUCATION

Education Committee - Representatives from Various Community Organizations


Priorities:

  • Advocating educational justice issues impacting people of color and the disadvantaged

  • Eliminating racial disparities in school suspensions

  • Encouraging support for low performing schools

  • Increasing parent/community awareness concerning issues involving public schools

  • Increasing parent/community engagement in public schools

  • Partnering with community stakeholders to create more positive outcomes for the youth of the community

  • Encouraging youth voter registration

Significant Contributions:

  • Suggested enhancing diversity/equity training for school personnel

  • Advocated for the signing of the School Justice Partnership

  • In 2019, hosted three community wide forums focusing on Eliminating Racial Disparities in School Suspensions

  • Members of the Education Committee attend monthly school board meetings, provide input into school policy, communicate regularly with school district administrators and support personnel

Future Events:

  • The Committee plans to continue hosting forums to inform and encourage community members to be more proactively involved in public education. (Depending upon COVID-19)
