President James E. (Jimmy) Buxton, Jr

A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, President Buxton has developed and demonstrated strong abilities in community leadership. He has served his country in the U.S. Army for three years and as a Finance NCO in the NC National Guard 21 years. He is a member of the First Baptist Church on Moore Street, and he serves on the Board of Directors of the Christian Commitment Corporation.

Some people have called the 1950s and 1960s the most important years in the history of America.  It was during this period that African Americans achieved the greatest gains in the struggle for freedom, equality, and empowerment.  As a young man, Jimmy was intimately involved in the Civil Rights struggle in Fayetteville.  He participated in demonstrations and rallies that helped to desegregate downtown stores, restaurants, and movie theaters.  He has always used his gifts to benefit others.  Proverbs 27:19 teaches us that “a man’s heart reflects the man.”  Jimmy’s heart represents the source of all his motivations—what he loves to do and what he cares about most.

After he medically retired from the private sector, Jimmy joined the NAACP Fayetteville NC Branch where his passion for the community grew as he began to realize that much needed to be done to make a difference, to change discriminatory practices, and to work for justice and equality for all people.  From interacting with the community and the organization’s leadership, he gained a greater appreciation for the struggles of the black community.  Jimmy has held many positions in the Fayetteville Branch and has been the branch president of one of the largest NAACP branches in North Carolina since 2007.   He was named Branch President of the Year in 2016 by the NC State Conference. Jimmy was elected the NC State Conference District 9 Director in 2011, a position he held until it was dissolved in 2023.  That same year he was elected to serve on the NC State Conference Executive Committee.  He was presented The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of North Carolina's highest awards, by Senator Kirk DeViere on Sunday, October 21, 2021. Under Jimmy's leadership, the Fayetteville Branch was presented with the Outstanding Organization of the Year award by the Fayetteville Human Relations Commission in February 2025. Jimmy is a Silver Life Member and a Golden Heritage Member of the NAACP because he strongly believes in the work that the NAACP has been engaged in for over 100 years.

He currently serves on the Advisory Committee for Black Voices. In 2025 he was a member of the committee that was formed to recommend a profile for the selection of Fayetteville's Chief of Police.

Jimmy is a graduate of E. E. Smith High School, and he attended Fayetteville State University and Fayetteville Technical Community College.  He also worked in the private sector for several years.  He is a proud father of eight adult children; he also has several loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.
